OFFICE GYM FITOUT

We were contacted by a company based in Bicester to assist in the fitting out of their office gym space. The company had a relatively large space above a commercial unit which they wished to repurpose as a gym.

Brief

The brief for this office gym fit out was to provide a range of commercial gym equipment that would appeal to a wide range of users – a mix of cardio and strength training gym equipment. For the most part the employees at this company were fitness enthusiasts so they were keen to have the latest gym equipment. However, in the first instance we had to carry out a site survey to determine the precise dimensions of the space so we could provide suitable gym equipment options.

After carrying out a site survey of the space and the number of potential users that would have access to the office gym, and the timeframes involved we submitted an initial proposal with a layout that we felt would work best in the room. After a couple of revisions to the equipment list and layout the company were happy to proceed.

GYM DESIGN AND LAYOUT

The room earmarked for the gym was relatively large (10m x 10m) with just about enough ceiling height (2.4m) to house most gym equipment safely. Although, lifting overhead would not be possible when using Olympic bars/weight plates. The room had quite a lot of windows and subsequently plenty of natural light which is often missing in public gyms as they are often located in the basements/lower ground floors of buildings. This natural light meant that a lot of the (cardio) equipment could be orientated to face outside which is a big plus point for users.  The size of the room allowed for each type of training to have its own dedicated area. Also, we made sure that there was enough space in between the various pieces of equipment to allow users to train safely and effectively.

FLOORING

The existing office space did have a hardwearing vinyl flooring which would be sufficient if the equipment that was going to be fitted was exclusively cardiovascular with some light weights. However, given the range of equipment required – heavy dumbbells, Olympic bars and weight plates, half rack – some form of additional protective rubber flooring would be necessary to protect the sub floor. We decided to create a long section of flooring down one side of the room which would essentially be the free weight zone.

THE ACTUAL FIT OUT

The gym space was up two small narrow sets of stairs, and a single door entrance. It therefore required a lot of hands to make sure everything was carefully carried into the area. Once all the component parts were brought into the space everything could be assembled and carefully placed in their allocated positions.
