We were instructed to design and fit out an unusually shaped space for a client in Sevenoaks, Kent. The space we were asked to fit-out with luxury gym equipment was above a triple length garage which had a relatively low sloping roof making the useable area quite restrictive. This made selecting gym equipment that would work within this restricted space a somewhat tricky proposition.
BRIEF
The brief was quite open ended although there were a number of specific gym equipment requests such as a squat rack and treadmill. Given the unusual shape and dimensions of the room it was clear that most of this larger gym equipment would have to be positioned in the centre of the room. This part of the room provided sufficient height, although it meant the equipment had to be orientated lengthways so the equipment could be used safely.

Precise measurements were very important not only from a user perspective but also from an installation perspective to ensure the selected luxury gym equipment could be installed correctly and safely. Also, due the location – above a garage – it was important to check that the room was appropriately strengthened to take the load of the gym equipment. Typically, in circumstances such as this we would seek advice from a structural engineer.

Using measurements to plot individual pieces of equipment on the plan it became clear that most squat/power racks would not work safely in the room due to the low sloping roof. Therefore, other options had to be considered including dual adjustable pulley systems. This process of elimination meant that short of custom building a rack there were very few traditional strength gym equipment options left. After determining that neither a rack or a pulley system was feasible in the space we advised the client that a good alternative would be the UNICA machine as it offered a large number of resistance exercises for multiple body parts and was a safer alternative to a tightly fitting squat rack.
